1953 Gretsch 6128 Duo Jet (Earliest Known Example) w/ Original Amplifier
1953 Gretsch 6128 Duo Jet w/ Matching Tweed Amplifier
We are very excited to present for sale, possibly the rarest guitar we have ever had in our shop. This near mint, 1953 Gretsch 6128 Duo Jet has been documented as the earliest known example of the Gretsch Duo Jet on a number of Gretsch reference websites including the Gretsch Pages. It is also possible that this could be the first one ever produced. Up until this turned up about 10 years ago, it was widely agreed upon by vintage guitar experts that 1954 was the first production year for the 6128 Duo Jet. That was quickly debunked as the original owner remarked "September 1953" as he produced the original bill of sale from the pocket of his work shirt. In our opinion, the documentation and condition is what makes this set so incredible.
This guitar was purchased brand new in September of 1953 at Kendle Music in Nashville. We have the original bill of sale from this purchase along with the business card from the shop that sold it! In addition to the bill of sale, we also have all of the original case candy, certificate of authenticity paperwork and even the original Electromatic amplifier that was purchased with it. Thats right...it includes the original leather strap, original cable, original polish cloth, and we even have some of the original packing paper. The amplifier also has its original schematic with it.
We Present the Yikes Jet
One of the remarkable story lines attached to this guitar is that it has only ever been available twice in the over 60 years since it was made. It was purchased new in 1953 and then it was brokered to the current owner about 10 years. Thats right, this is a two owner guitar! This guitar has not been up and down the block as a number of high end vintage guitar have been. When this guitar was offered for sale the last time, it was posted on the Gretsch pages with a one word comment..."Yikes!" Ever since then, it has been referred to as the Yikes Jet.
We have included a bunch of photos of this guitar and you will see that this guitar is completely original and in museum quality condition. Some of the special features include the early "Scripty" peg head logo, DeArmond pickups, fixed Melita bridge w/ G tailpiece, original open gear tuners and its original tweed case which is also in mint condition. This guitar is a great player as well and it has no repairs or modifications.
In addition to the guitar, we also have the original tweed Electromatic amplifier that was purchased with the guitar in 1953. The amp is in equally minty condition showing no major scuffs or flaws.
